Bhimashankar is one of the 12 jyotirligas of India. It is a three-hour journey from Pune that covers a distance of 120 kms. This sacred place is placed in the laps of dense forests of Sahyadri range.


The temple is a calming place with beautiful Nagara architectural style of 13th century, whereas the surroundings of Western Ghats are a treat for the eyes. You will observe a large bell is placed in front of the temple. This was offered by Chimaji Appa, brother of Bajirao Peshwa. He collected this bell after the victory in the war against the Portuguese. He presented it to Bhimashankar temple.


Temple timings:

To reach the temple you have to get down about 300 steps. The temple timings and daily schedule are as follows

Kakada Aarti - 4:30 am to 5:05 am
Normal Darshans for Devotees - 5:15 am to 11:30 am.
Maha Puja - 12 pm.
Maha Nivedyam - 12:30 pm.
Abhishek and Puja - 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm.
Shringar Puja - 2:45 pm to 3:15 pm.
Aarti - 3:15 pm to 3:30 pm
Shringar Darshan - 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm
Evening Aarti - 7:30 pm to 8 pm.
Darshans for Devotees - 8:00 to 9:30 pm
Temple closes at 9:30 pm.


You can perform special Pooja and offerings to the Deity by pre-booking. Booking facility is available at the temple premises only. During Monaday and special days like at the time of Shravan month and Mahashivaratri the temple will be crowded.



Surrounding of the temple:

The place is known as source of river"Bhima" so it is known as "BhaimaShankar". The Sahyadri hill surroundings are heaven for the adventurous people with much scope for trekking. There is a wildlife sanctuary to see, which was mainly established to protect the species of giant squirrels called Shekaru. There is also a lake named after Hanuman nearby.


When to visit:

You can visit here round the year, but during Monsoon it rains heavily so, roads will be slippery. Only small food stalls are there nearby the temple. This is most often a day-long trip. However, you may choose to stay, with the priests provisioning for accommodation at a low cost.
